What is a Vein Clinic? And Other Questions About Vein Problems in CA
What is a vein clinic?
Vein clinics are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of vein problems. However, different vein clinics have different procedures and protocols, and they can’t be generalized. Some vein clinics only provide cosmetic treatments for spider veins and superficial varicose veins — they don’t diagnose and treat the root cause. Others only specialize in vascular surgeries, such as vein ligation and vein stripping — procedures that involve extended downtime. And some vein clinics, like ours, specialize in minimally invasive vein treatments for the root cause.
What do vein clinics do?
Vein clinics are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of vein problems. However, different vein clinics have different procedures and protocols, and they can’t be generalized. Some vein clinics only provide cosmetic treatments for spider veins and superficial varicose veins — they don’t diagnose and treat the root cause. Others only specialize in vascular surgeries, such as vein ligation and vein stripping — procedures that involve extended downtime. And some vein clinics, like ours, specialize in minimally invasive vein treatments for the root cause.
Is vein treatment painful?
Minimally invasive spider vein and varicose vein treatments are safe, effective, and painless. They are in-office procedures performed under local anesthesia, with or without intravenous sedation. As such, you’re awake for the procedure but don’t feel any pain — only a mild pressure as the catheter is driven through an incision on your skin. Some procedures may cause a slight burning sensation for a few seconds, but the discomfort is tolerable. If you’re particularly anxious, you can also ask the vein doctor for sedation.
What happens during vein treatment?
As mentioned previously, all vein clinics follow unique protocols for their vein treatment. Some specialize in cosmetic treatments, some in vascular surgeries, and some in comprehensive, minimally invasive vein treatments. We can’t speak for the vein treatment process at all other vein clinics, but the following is an overview of what you can expect from the vein treatment at our centers for vein treatment in California.
1. Diagnosis
Your vein treatment in CA starts with a thorough diagnosis and consultation. The vein specialist examines your leg veins and discusses your symptoms, such as leg heaviness, restless leg syndrome, frequent leg cramps, and leg swelling. The vein doctor also reviews your medical history to determine if you have a high risk of vein disease. We also perform an ultrasound scan to visualize the blood flow in your leg veins and determine (conclusively) if you have chronic venous insufficiency, the root cause of most vein issues.
2. Treatment Planning
After diagnosing the root cause of your vein issues, the vein physician curates a personalized vein treatment plan for you. This involves selecting the ideal vein treatments for your symptoms, medical history, diagnostic results, and insurance coverage options. The vein doctor will highlight your vein treatment options and discuss their unique pros, cons, cost, and insurance coverage options, helping you make an informed decision. As such, you are always kept in the loop while curating a vein treatment plan.
3. Primary Treatment
If you have chronic venous insufficiency, your primary vein treatment will start with one of the following procedures — radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, or venaseal. The vein doctor will use thermal energy, laser energy, or medical adhesives to seal or collapse the diseased vein, thus rerouting the accumulated blood into healthier leg veins. These procedures restore optimal blood circulation to the heart, thereby addressing the root cause of your vein issues.
4. Cosmetic Treatment
After the primary vein treatment or if you don’t have vein disease, the vein doctor will remove the superficial varicose veins and spider veins. Ambulatory phlebectomy is the best treatment for superficial varicose veins — it involves the physical extraction of varicose veins through small incisions on the skin’s surface. Sclerotherapy is the best treatment for spider veins — it involves injecting a sclerosant medicine into spider veins to turn them into hardened scar tissues eventually absorbed by the body.
5. Recovery & Aftercare
The vein doctor will discuss your recovery and aftercare guidelines after the vein treatment process. The entire procedure should conclude within an hour, following which you can resume your daily activities and work immediately. However, you’ll have to wear compression stockings for a few days to minimize the risk of vein disease recurrence. You’ll also have to avoid strenuous workouts and heavy lifting for a few days. You can contact the vein specialist at any time if you have any concerns.
What do you wear to a vein doctor?
If you have spider veins and varicose veins on your legs, you should wear loose-fitting pants and clothes to the vein doctor’s office. You will also have to wear compression stockings after your vein treatment, so wear something that would feel comfortable above your stockings.
Do I need a vein specialist?
You need a vein specialist if you have any of the signs or symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, such as leg heaviness, restless leg syndrome, frequent leg cramps, leg swelling, spider veins, or varicose veins. The vein doctor will remove the superficial veins, thus improving your leg’s appearance and your confidence. And if you have underlying vein disease, the vein doctor will address it before you experience severe complications.
Is vein removal covered by insurance?
Spider vein and varicose vein removal might be covered by insurance if you have underlying chronic venous insufficiency or if the treatment is deemed to be “medically necessary.” Our vein doctors perform ultrasound scans to produce visual proof of the necessity of your vein treatment, thus helping you get insurance coverage. You can also request free insurance verification at our center for vein treatment in California.
